Did you know that in South Africa alone there are more than TWO Rhino’s killed everyday for their horns???
This is being done by people from all countries and of all colours purely for money. Criminal gangs world wide have become involved in the illegal trading of Poached Rhino horn which now has a black market value higher than that of gold!!
Who is the end user creating the demand for this?? For many years China has been a big user of powdered Rhino horn for traditional medicine despite many claims that is has no real medicinal value at all but the latest culprit for increasing this disgusting trade is said to be the new rich of Vietnam who wait for it………are using it as a party drug!!! They are sniffing it up their nose!!! So in real terms we now have a group of people who will show off to their “friends” by sticking what is effectively powdered hair and nails ( keratin) up their nose to get high……..I don’t know whether to feel sorry for them or to just point and laugh!!!
The serious side to this of course is that the horn is being collected in such a way that it is totally unsustainable and Unacceptable. Already the Western Black Rhino is extinct mainly due to poaching. If we don’t all get involved and we leave this evil trade to continue then it won’t be long before the rest of the worlds Rhino population follows suit.
As many of you will already know I have been actively involved in wildlife conservation training for around 9 years now and in that time I have been very lucky to see many Rhino up close and personal and also be in contact with groups that are out there fighting back at the coal face against the poachers. This is where you can help….. In November and December this year I intend to ride from Cape Town up the West Coast of South Africa into Namibia where I will spend several days visiting reserves and if possible anti poaching projects. I will continue north to the Angola border where I will turn East and cross the Caprivi Strip over the border with Botswana and on to Victoria Falls.
From Vic Fall the intention is to take a ferry to the town of Kariba then swing back south through Zimbabwe via Harare and Bulawayo again visiting as many anti poaching and rhino protection programmes as I can. I will of course be blogging and posting photos as much as I can where signal will allow.
I am still in the early stage of planning but already I have had great support from such companies as The Adventure Bike Shop, Continental Tyres, Putoline Oils, Adventureparts.co.uk as well as backing from Namibia and Zimbabwe Tourist Boards. I am going to try and keep you updated via this blog page as we progress.
The idea behind this ride is two fold. Firstly to raise awareness of the plight of not just rhino but all threatened species at the hands of the poachers . Secondly to raise funds for the Unite Against Poaching initiative which helps to fund equipment to the Ranger on the ground who are out there everyday facing the danger directly from the poachers.
How Can You Help?
If you would like to show your support for this ride then you can either get in touch with AJ at firstname.lastname@example.org with details of ride equipment needed for the trip or if you would like to donate then you can simply do so by going to our Go Fund Me page and make a donation there. As always this will be a solo unsupported ride.
Please help us to make this ride a success and something that people from all over the world will pay attention to. If we don’t do something positive now then there is a very real chance that your grandchildren won’t see a wild Rhino!! We are hoping that this will be the first of many Ride for Rhino events both in Africa and Europe. Keep following and sharing our posts.
