Day 2
Straight after breakfast you will be taken to where the bikes await you. After the paperwork and bike familiarisation is completed we will head off on the road for what promises to be an amazing and informative trip. By mid afternoon we should arrive at the town of Bethlehem in the Free State. One of the most famous sights in Bethlehem is the mound of stones that is found just outside the town. Mineworkers would drop stones on this spot to ask and thank their ancestors for protection, to and from work. The town has many attractions within town limits that are worth a look. The Baartman House is a magnificent historical museum with fascinating exhibits, as is the Museum of Cultural History.
Day 3
A chance to relax and spoil yourself at The Fordoun Hotel Spa Resort. Situated along the Midland Meander. The hotel comprises seventeen luxurious, individually appointed double suites with private verandas, under floor heating and dream bathrooms, each with bath and shower, and a dressing area. Each room has its own television, and tea/coffee-making facilities. After a days riding along the Midlands meander you will be able to take advantage of the spa and all its facilities if you wish.
Day 4 & 5
After Breakfast you will head out to probably one of the most well known battle grounds in South Africa. Riding some dirt roads to get to the lodge you will finally arrive at Rorke’s Drift, famous, infamous but delightful is an experience not to be missed. Located on the battlefields of kwaZulu-Natal, South Africa this little hamlet has seen some of the most significant moments in South Africa’s history. The Battle of Rorke’s Drift in 1879 was a part of the Anglo-Zulu war that saw the first defeat of the British Forces by an imposing Zulu Impi in the morning at Isandlwana and a complete turnaround in the evening of the same day at Rorke’s Drift. Also during this time the French Prince Imperial died in a skirmish and ended the Bonaparte dynasty. Today it is marked by a single cenotaph in a lonely field. At Fugitive’s Drift is another lone cenotaph raised to the honour of two men whose sole purpose was to preserve the Queen’s Colours and whose bravery was acknowledged by the award of a Victoria Cross. Whilst here you can relax in the historic surrounding and on the second day enjoy the Battle grounds tour with a packed lunch. You will visit the actual battle grounds of Rorke’s drift and Isandlwana.
Day 6
Leave Rorke’s Drift Lodge after breakfast and we head east. Northern KwaZulu Natal has many natural and splendid beauties, but little can compare with the superb wildlife to be seen on the shores of Lake Jozini (also known as Pongolapoort Lake). On board Shayamanzi Houseboat, soak up the stunning scenery of the Lebombo Mountains and Pongola Game Reserve. Enjoy calm serenity on the water or the thrill of Tiger fishing! Experience the first Houseboats in South Africa – the only one of their kind. Shayamanzi is all about taking time out to appreciate Africa’s special wonders. Tonight you will sleep on board the boats.
Day 7
Today we have an early start with a ride of approx 350 kms to be done. We follow the boarder of Swaziland around to the west and then North to the historic town of Barberton. This is a destination you can make your own. Relax in the gentle serenity of the area, or thrill to the wild exuberance of the pioneering spirit as you explore on foot a number of hiking trails in the hills behind. A slow stroll from town centre will take you into a gentle wooded ravine where you can see Purple Crested and Knysna Turaco, and Narina Trogon. Another walk includes a kilometre long tunnel used in the old days to move ore from a mine to a long vanished crusher.
Day 8
An easy start to the day allowing you time to explore before we head towards the Safari session of the tour. Heading north running parrellel to The Kruger National Park we will arrive in the town of Hoedspruit and then on to Mohlabetsi Game Lodge. Situated in part of a Big Five Game Reserve here you will enjoy the real feel of the wilderness. Accommodation is in traditional built Rondawels (thatched Round Houses). The food is plentiful and fantastic quality. Life slows down to the rhythms of nature and the rising and setting of the sun dictates our movements. The emphasis here is upon close-up encounters with Africa’s spectacular wildlife, from the mighty elephant, the impressive lion or the miniscule termite. Enjoy a night drive and an early morning walk in the bush with highly professional Game Rangers.
Day 9 & 10
A short trip and a chance to visit the small but busy town of Hoedspriut. We will arrive at our next destination mid to late afternoon and once again you will be treated to the wonders of African hospitality as you are welcomed to Moholoholo Forest Camp. The luxury accommodation here has to be seen to be believed. Two nights at this lodge give you the chance to relax in full and to take advantage of all the facilities. Food is all fresh and cooked on site by the excellent staff. You will be taken on Game drives, walks and have the chance to visit the Famous Rehabilitation Centre that has been featured in many press and tv articles. On the second day we will ride out to the Blyde River canyon and if you wish you can take a trip out on the boat there. Or we can simply ride around to see the wonders of the Drakensberg Mountains. In the evenings you will be in awe of the sounds of the forest. Wood owls, Jackal, Hyena, Lion and maybe even Leopard. Relax, enjoy and find peace.
Day 11
We will need an early start for today we head back to JHB to return the bikes and head for home. But not before along the way we pass some amazing scenery and stop in some historic towns. We expect to be back into JHB by about 4pm which give you time to change ready for the flight home. Taking with you of course the wonderful memories of The Rainbow nation. If you would like to spend future days in JHB then we can help arrange this for you at extra cost to yourself.
